Gingerbread Party

This was our second year building gingerbread houses with the boys. Last year we bought the kits and they enjoyed sticking a few candies in the frosting before losing interest. This year, since I'm on maternity leave, I decided to take it a step further and bake the gingerbread, make the frosting and invite a few of the boys' friends over for a little party.

Well, of course, it didn't go as planned. The gingerbread simply wouldn't roll out, and refused to be cut into the proper shapes. I was cursing Martha Stewart and her perfect recipe, when I realized the dough had to be pretty much frozen to work. Since it was 10PM at this time, I gave up and decided to buy the kits in the morning for all the kids. After returning from the store and beginning to assemble the four kits, I read that the frosting was supposed to dry for 2-3 hours before decorating. Well, this didn't happen since I finished assembling 5 minutes before the guests arrived. Luckily, no houses were demolished during the decorating. I think everyone had a good time. Sometimes simple is better!

Those gingerbread houses are cute!! I totally am with you on the prefab houses (gingerbread that is). I had a major disaster trying to make pinwheel cookies. I put the dough in fridge and everything. WHAT A PAIN!!! My mother told me to roll it out b/t two sheets of wax paper...she didn't tell me what to do when the dough stuck to the wax paper. ;) Somehow I don't think my sister has this problem.

Cookie Exchange

The first Saturday of December, I hosted my first Cookie Exchange. I had been wanting to do this for years, but things were always too busy. I decided to go ahead and do it anyway this year and it was fun! Lots of ladies attended and the cookies were great! Maybe I will do it again...

STAR Reading

I hesitated to post this, but it's just so amazing to me! Hunter received what is possibly his last reading assessment in elementary school (5th grade). His scores are incredible, but what makes this so unbelievable to me - is where we were 4 years ago.  In first grade, this child struggled with sight words EVERY NIGHT. Seriously, there were tears 4-5 nights per week. Hour long tear filled, flash card sessions...daily. When I look at where Graham is now in 1st grade...reading/sounding out almost every word in front of him with ease...I truly realize how far Hunter has come! So what these results say (to the best of my understanding) is that Hunter is in the 5th grade, 4th month of school (GP 5.44) and tests at a grade equivalent of 12.9+ (compared to other students nationally). He's in the 98/99th percentile and can comprehend up to 80% of 11.4th grade material. So proud of his progress and so grateful for his 1st grade teacher, Ms. Shavon Diggs, who encouraged me to keep going...

Hunter is Five!!!!!

Hunter turned the big 05 on Saturday, September 26th. He had a Mario Bros themed party. It turned out pretty well. He had a good turn-out at his party, even though it came a flood about the time everyone had to get in their cars. Thanks to all who braved the weather! The kids had a great time and no one got konked in the head while they were trying to break the pinata! :-) Hunter's Cake - I didn't even cry while decorating it! Daddy and Graham watching the Pinata action! Temporary Tattoos Isaac hitting the Chomp Chomp Pinata Hunters BIG present - A playground that is still sitting in boxes!
