Math-A-Thon

So, today the boys come home from school with the latest fundraiser information. In my opinion, it’s PURE GENIUS! So, here is the deal. Each child gets a login to a website tenmarks.com. Once logged in, they have THOUSANDS of math questions available on their appropriate grade level. So, they bring home a sheet requesting a per problem donation. The donations will go 100% for technology improvements in the school. The overall winner gets a “Private Movie Screening” at the school with 6 of their friends, including snacks and all. Then several winners get to play a kids vs. teachers dodge ball game. The winning classrooms get to pick the teachers that play. So, of course my boys came home completely amped up.

Now here’s the GENIUS part. These questions are similar to what will be on the TCAP (Standardized Test), and the contest ends right before the tests begin. What a SNEAKY way to get the kids to be excited about practicing for their tests! And the school benefits to boot!

My only problem with the fundraiser is that there seems to be no limit to the number of problems that could be done, and both of my boys were so excited about the contest that they were fighting over the computer! So, I decided to only donate $0.10 per question. The first weekend, both boys completed 300 problems. That’s $60.00 Y’ALL! This contest lasts for 5 weeks Y’ALL!!!

I’ll keep you updated, but I’m thinking this fundraiser may cost me a good chunk of my tax refund from Uncle Sam!

Cookie Exchange

The first Saturday of December, I hosted my first Cookie Exchange. I had been wanting to do this for years, but things were always too busy. I decided to go ahead and do it anyway this year and it was fun! Lots of ladies attended and the cookies were great! Maybe I will do it again...

STAR Reading

I hesitated to post this, but it's just so amazing to me! Hunter received what is possibly his last reading assessment in elementary school (5th grade). His scores are incredible, but what makes this so unbelievable to me - is where we were 4 years ago.  In first grade, this child struggled with sight words EVERY NIGHT. Seriously, there were tears 4-5 nights per week. Hour long tear filled, flash card sessions...daily. When I look at where Graham is now in 1st grade...reading/sounding out almost every word in front of him with ease...I truly realize how far Hunter has come! So what these results say (to the best of my understanding) is that Hunter is in the 5th grade, 4th month of school (GP 5.44) and tests at a grade equivalent of 12.9+ (compared to other students nationally). He's in the 98/99th percentile and can comprehend up to 80% of 11.4th grade material. So proud of his progress and so grateful for his 1st grade teacher, Ms. Shavon Diggs, who encouraged me to keep going...

Hunter is Five!!!!!

Hunter turned the big 05 on Saturday, September 26th. He had a Mario Bros themed party. It turned out pretty well. He had a good turn-out at his party, even though it came a flood about the time everyone had to get in their cars. Thanks to all who braved the weather! The kids had a great time and no one got konked in the head while they were trying to break the pinata! :-) Hunter's Cake - I didn't even cry while decorating it! Daddy and Graham watching the Pinata action! Temporary Tattoos Isaac hitting the Chomp Chomp Pinata Hunters BIG present - A playground that is still sitting in boxes!
